To maximize your chances of seeing Galapagos penguins in the wild, the western islands—particularly Fernandina and the western coast of Isabela—are the top regions to visit. These cooler, nutrient-rich waters are the penguins' primary habitat and offer excellent viewing opportunities both on land and while snorkeling.
The best time to visit for penguin sightings is during the cool season from August to October, when the Humboldt Current brings colder waters and an abundance of food, making penguins more active and visible near shorelines. Sightings are still possible in other months, but this window offers the highest likelihood of frequent encounters.
